San Jose State 35, Hawaii 0 (FINAL): Inside the Spartans live updates and game thread (2)

This Saturday in college football concludes in paradise, in a battle of two teams fighting to stay in postseason contention.

Seeking a third straight win this season to keep the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy in San Jose, the San Jose State Spartans (3-5, 2-2 Mountain West) visit the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (2-6, 0-3 MW) in an away conference matchup. Hawaii is one loss away from becoming ineligible for bowl consideration; San Jose State is two losses away from that same benchmark. This is Hawaii's homecoming game as well, following San Jose State's own homecoming win last week, 42-21 vs. Utah State.

Kickoff from the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex in Honolulu is at 6 p.m. (HT)/9 p.m. (PT) for the final Division I kickoff of the day. Most Bay Area Spartan fans will have the easiest time listening to the Spartan Sports Network broadcast on KTRB (AM 860) orhttps://860amtheanswer.com/or on the SanJoseState FB Twitter.Alternatively, a free live video available outside of Hawaii on the Team1Sports app,as confirmed by the Hawaii game notes.

This game will also mark the last time starting quarterbackChevan Cordeiro, who transferred from Hawaii to San Jose State in 2022, will play a college football game in his home state.

For the fifth time, the two teams will play for the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy, created in 2019 after the passing of Dick Tomey, former head coach of Hawaii and San Jose State. Hawaii won the first trophy game in 2019, but San Jose State has won three straight from 2020 to 2022.

First quarter

Kickoff at 6 p.m. (HT)/9 p.m. (PT).

San Jose State won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, so they will kick off to begin the first half.

(14:57) The game begins disastrously for Hawaii. Taren Schive sent the kickoff60 yards, bouncing on the Hawaii 5-yard line withoutbeing touched by Hawaii kick returner Cameron Stone. Instead of attempting a fair catch, Stone tried to pick up the ball and run with it.However, he took a hard hit and fumbled the ball, and Jaylan Lawson recovered the fumble at the Hawaii 6.

Stoneremained on the ground after taking the hit, soplay is suspended as he is being attended to by trainers.

This is the second straight game where San Jose State forced a fumble on a kickoff. In the homecoming game last week, a 42-21 win vs. Utah State, San Jose State recovered a kick return fumble after scoring a touchdown on the opening drive.

(14:09) Hawaii calls their first timeout. This drive has had a sluggish start, due to a false start and Cordeiro mishandling a snap, followed by a near-interception on second down. It will be 3rd-and-goal from the Hawaii 14 out of the timeout.

(13:55) Unfortunately, Kyler Halvorsen could not convert the chip shot field goal in his home state, shanking the 31-yarder wide right. Hawaii will snap from their own 20 out of the timeout.

(10:47) Hawaii does convert two third downs, but the offense stalls at the Hawaii 49 after three incomplete passes from Brayden Schager, including two pass break-ups by DJ Harvey. However, the Matthew Shipley 44-yard punt bounces all the way to the SJSU 7.

(9:18) San Jose State gainedjust two yards in a three-and-out. However, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Hawaii gifted San Jose State a free 15-yard first down.

(4;07) Taking over six and a half minutes off the clock, San Jose State gets on the board in a 12-play, 93-yard play aided by a Hawaii third down defensive penalty. Quali Conley ran in a six-yard touchdown run, followed by a Halvorsen extra point. San Jose State leads 7-0, better late than never after blowing an early scoring opportunity. This drive took 6:40, with eight of the 12 plays being runs.

Unfortunately, a kickoff out of bounds gifts Hawaii first down at their own 35.

(2:11) The Hawaii drive began with Schager completing a 21-yard pass to Alex Perry, but Hawaii stalled at the San Jose State 42 on 4th-and-8 after being shoved out of bounds by Harvey. Shipley punts for the second time, with his 29-yard punt fair caught by Matthew Coleman at the SJSU 13.

(0:06)On a screen pass from Cordeiro, Conley had a 32-yard catch, only to have the ballpopped out by Isaiah Tufa*ga, recovered by Virdel Edwards at the Hawaii 38.

(0:00) The first quarter ends with a Solo Vaipulu 14-yard run. Hawaii will have 1st-and-10 from the SJSU 48 to start the second quarter.

Second quarter

(15:00) Hawaii 1st-and-10 from the SJSU 48.

(13:31) Once again, Hawaii cannot capitalize off a big gain. After a holding penalty moved a first down backwards 10 yards, Jordan Pollard made a hard hit to stuff Pofele Ashlock for no gain on a 2nd-and-12 catch. Then, Taniela Latu and Noah Lavulo hurried Schager into throwing the ball away on 3rd-and-12. On Shipley's third punt of the day, Coleman fair caught the 36-yard punt at the SJSU 14.

(9:27) With San Jose State 3rd-and-10 from their own 41, Hawaii calls their second timeout. Although San Jose State converted one third down, that was immediately followed by Cordeiro taking a seven-yard sack. Kairee Robinson did gain back the lost yards on a seven-yard catch on a screen pass.

(5:21) Hawaii burns their final timeout. They have had no answers to any third downs on this drive so far: San Jose State has converted three third downs and will have 3rd-and-6from the eight. This drive that started from the SJSU 14 has gone 78 yards and has gone for 12 plays and over eight minutes.

(5:16) That was a wasted timeout. On third down, Cordiero found Nick Nash eight yards for a touchdown. Halvorsen made his second extra point of the day, and San Jose Stateleads 14-0.

Hawaii has had a porous defense in conference, giving up 40 or more points in their three conference losses. That is showing in their multiple failures to stop San Jose State on third down other than the one that preceded the Halvorsen missed field goal. San Jose State has yet to punt today.

Schive sent the kickoff 51 yards, fair caught by Edwards at the Hawaii 14.

(3:40) Overcoming an offsides penalty, San Jose State forces the first defensive three-and-out, aided by a Kenyon Reed sack on 2nd-and-5. Shipley punts for the fourth time tonight, with the 39-yard punt falling out of bounds at the SJSU 30.

(1:06) With Hawaii already out of timeouts, San Jose State finally calls a timeout after Conley was dropped for a loss of six on a checkdown pass. It will be 2nd-and-16 from the Hawaii 44 out of the timeout. There is the opportunity to take a three-possession lead into halftime, having squandered earlier opportunities due to the missed field goal and fumble. Will San Jose State execute?

(0:42) San Jose State calls the second timeout. As they have shown throughout conference play, Hawaii has a very weak defense, having allowed San Jose State to convert nine out of 10 third downs tonight. On 3rd-and-12 from the Hawaii 40, Cordeiro found Charles Ross for a 35-yard gain, then handed off to Robinson for three yards. It will be 2nd-and-goal from the 2.

(0:38) At last, San Jose State has that three-possession lead that was anticipated earlier. Robinson took the ball two yards into the end zone, and Halvorsen converted his third extra point for a 21-0 lead. Hawaii will need to drive into field goal possession with 38 seconds left and no timeouts, due to Timmy Chang's unwise use of all three before the five-minute mark.

(0:00) Hawaii ends the first half with one final act of ineptitude. With the clock running after a catch for no gain, a false start penalty caused a ten-second runoff with 0:06 on the clock, ending the half with San Jose State leading 21-0.

Halftime report

For the first time, San Jose State has shut out an opponent for an entire first half, leading 21-0 at halftime at Hawaii.

Inwhat is very likely his final college football game in his home state, Chevan Cordeiro completed 12 out of 17 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown for San Jose State3. For the home team Hawaii, Cordeiro's replacement Brayden Schager is 8-for-15 for 71 yards.

Just like the last two games, San Jose State is dominating on time of possession and defense. San Jose State has had the ball for 20:25, while Hawaii has had the ball for only 8:57. The run game is also returning dividends for San Jose State, with Kairee Robinson and Quali Conley having both of the rushing touchdowns tonight; San Jose State has 103 rushing yards on 25 yards as a team. Nick Nash had one receiving touchdown as well.

Having held Hawaii to zero points and 94 total yards this half, San Jose State hascompleted the best first half defense of the year since the September 9 home game vs. Cal Poly, where San Jose State allowed only 92 first half yards and led 38-3 at halftime.

The third down conversion discrepancy is also very jarring: San Jose State is 9-for-10 while Hawaii is only 2-for-6.

Third quarter

(15:00) Jabari Bates fair caught the 64-yard kickoff from Ben Falck. San Jose State starts from their own 25.

(14:03) San Jose State finally goes three-and-out and punts for the first time tonight. Alex Weir sends the punt a net 60 yards, with the special teams unit guarding the ball until Andrew Jenkins tapped the punt dead at the Hawaii 16.

(12:26) Returning the favor on defense, San Jose State forced a second straight three-and-out, with Bryun Parham breaking up a second down pass to Koali Nishigaya followed by Tre Smith and Soane Toia splitting a sack on third down.

San Jose State will have very favorable field position out of the TV timeout, as Coleman fair caught the 44-yard Shipley punt at the SJSU 48. This is Shipley's fifth punt of the night.

(12:15) Groans could be heard in the press box after San Jose State needed just one play to extend the lead. Robinson busted past tacklers for a 52-yard touchdown run, and Halvorsen sent his fourth extra point inside the uprights. San Jose State leads 28-0. This is Robinson's longest rushing play of the season and his second touchdown of the game.

Nishigaya fair caught the 64-yardSchive kickoff. Hawaii will start on their own 25.

(8:44) Despite converting one third down on a Schager scramble, Hawaiistalled at their own 35 following a holding penalty. However, Shipley carried the fake punt on 4th-and-14 for 17 yards, with an additional 15 yards gifted from a late hit penalty on San Jose State. Hawaii has 1st-and-1o from the SJSU 33.

(7:41) Schager attempted an ill-advised throw into the end zone past any open receivers, and Jay'vion Cole read the pass and picked it off, returning the ball 51 yards to the Hawaii 49. San Jose State will have 1st-and-10 from yet another favorable starting position, after what could have been a defensive disaster.

(5:39) San Jose State calls a timeout, after a delay of game penalty moves them backwards from 4th-and-5 from the Hawaii 24 to 4th-and-10 from the Hawaii 29. Halvorsen will attempt a 47-yard field goal out of the timeout.

(5:17) San Jose State changed the play call to bring out the offense on the 4th-and-10. Under pressure, Cordeiro side-armed a pass, with Nash securing the ball with both hands for 16 yards and a first down.

(3:43) Not that San Jose State really needed those extra points, but a second fourth down offensive play failed and ends the drive after nine plays, 44 yards, and 3:58. Robinson was stuffed for a loss of one on a 4th-and-1 handoff. Hawaii will have first down at their own 5.

(0:00) After Schager was flagged for intentional grounding, Hawaii had 3rd-and-17. The quarter ended with Toia sacking Schager for a loss of four. Hawaii will likely punt on 4th-and-21 from their own 30, unless they are willing to risk gifting San Jose State another short field.

Fourth quarter

(15:00) Hawaii has 4th-and-20 from the HAW 30.

Side observation: There is not a mass exodus of fans to the exit yet; perhaps they were willing to stay for the entirety of homecoming regardless of result. The seats in front of the press box still have plenty of fans.

(14:52) Shipley punts for the seventh time tonight. The punt rolls out of bounds at the SJSU 30 for a total 40 yards.

(11:56) San Jose State stalls after five plays and 22 yards. Alex Weir sent the punt 50 yards into the end zone for a touchback. Hawaii will start from their own 25.

(10:32) Hawaii stalls on their own 42 after four plays and 22 yards. Shipley punts an eighth time, and it went only 18 yards: The ball strangely boomeranged from the SJSU 25 all the way to the SJSU 40, gifting San Jose State 15 free yards. San Jose State will snap from the 40 out of the TV timeout.

(6:55) San Jose State calls their second timeout. They will have 2nd-and-10 from the Hawaii 24.

(6:45) Under pressure, Cordeiro scrambled in the pocket before aiming andslinging on target a wide open Nash for a 24-yard touchdown. Halvorsen scored his fifth extra point for a 35-0 San Jose State lead.If he is benched for the backups on the next drive, Cordeiro will end this game 16-for-26 for 251 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.

With the game really out of hand now, the north end zone seats are emptying out.

Schive sent the kickoff 55 yards, fair caught by Nishigaya. Hawaii has benched the offensive starters, with junior Jake Farrell subbed in.

(2:57) San Jose State got their third defensive takeaway of the game, after Jenkins picked off Farrell on a 4th-and-6 desperation pass. However, Jenkins was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, moving the starting field position half the distance to the goal.Jay Butterfield is now in at quarterback for San Jose State with the starting position moved from the SJSU 23 to SJSU 12.

(0:00) Butterfield took the finalfour snaps, with Conley converting a third down with a seven-yard run to maintain this final possession. Butterfield kneeled out the clock to end the game on a 35-0 San Jose State win.

Final report

Winning their third in a row and staying in the hunt for a bowl game, San Jose State (4-5, 3-2 MW) shut out Hawaii 35-0 in Honolulu, also eliminating the 2-7 (0-4 MW) Rainbow Warriors from postseason eligibility.

In what is very likely his final college football game in his home state, San Jose State and former Hawaii starting quarterback Chevan Cordeiro passed 16 for 26 with 251 yards and two touchdowns. For the third straight game, San Jose State had over 200 rushing yards.

This win also contained the familiar combo of dominance on both thetime of possession and defense. San Jose State had possession for 34 minutes and had a plus-two turnover margin, with a fumble recovery and two interceptions.

San Jose State will have a bye next weekend before the final two home games of the season, starting November 11 vs. rival Fresno State then senior day November 18 vs. San Diego State. The regular season finale will be November 25 at UNLV. November has usually not been favorable for San Jose State under Brent Brennan, and this year could be an opportunity to fix it now that the team is entering November with a dominant three-game win streak and a bye week.

By not allowing a single point this game, San Jose State got their first shutout win since the 2013 season opener, a 24-0 win vs. Sacramento State.
